The all-new SsangYong Musso Sports Utility Truck (SUT) for Europe has been launched at the Geneva motor show.

Entering the fast-growing and highly competitive SUT/ pick-up market segment, the new Musso is an extremely competent multi-purpose vehicle with traditional SsangYong values – comprehensively equipped and value pricing.

As Korea’s leading and only SUV and 4x4 specialist manufacturer, SsangYong is committed to refreshing its entire product portfolio, and recently completed its SUV model line-up by launching its all-new flagship model, Rexton.

Now, just a few months later it is launching this brand-new SUT to replace the Actyon Sports (also known as Musso and Korando Sports in other markets). To be called Musso in all international markets – Musso means rhinoceros in Korean - it takes its strong, tough and powerful image from the SUV of the same name used by the brand since the 1990s.

Built on the same architecture as the new Rexton, Musso shares its body-on-frame construction to give an extremely strong truck that delivers excellent off-road driving performance and safety from its quad-frame and four-wheel-drive system.

Designed to carry passengers in comfort and loads securely, the vehicle combines a five-seat crew-cab body style with a 1,011 litre capacity load deck. This combination of sports utility truck and passenger car means Musso is designed to offer style, performance and comfort to the driver and family or workmates, and with great load carrying versatility.

Musso is powered by the same e-XDi220 engine as found in the Rexton, and delivers a maximum power of 181ps at 4,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 420Nm at 1,600 to 2,600 rpm. It is available with either a 6-speed manual or an Aisin 6-speed automatic transmission to give outstanding power transmission performance and durability.

Equipment levels are extremely comprehensive, and include safety features such as lane change assist, rear cross traffic alert and blind spot detection to help prevent accidents.

Inside, Musso is surprisingly well equipped compared with other SUT & pick-ups, and as well as offering excellent shoulder and leg room, its seats are trimmed in Nappa leather for luxury and comfort. It also features a state-of-the-art infotainment system that includes a 9.2-inch HD screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, wi-fi mirroring and Bluetooth connectivity.

Following its European debut at the Geneva Motor Show, Musso will go on sale in Europe and internationally from May.

Styling

Exterior design

The exterior design of the Musso gives the vehicle a bold and muscular stance, and is inspired by the ‘dignified motion of nature’, one of the elements of SsangYong’s design language, Nature-born 3 Motion.

A bold chrome line across the radiator grille and the curves of the bonnet present a robust look and the impression of strength. The shoulder wing grille – now a characteristic styling cue of all new SsangYong models - stretches out to the headlights, while the dynamic character lines to the side and especially the rear, add a sense of power and volume to the vehicle.

HID/Halogen headlamps with integrated LED positioning lights and direction indicators convey a more refined look.

The doors are designed to cover the sills along the lower part of the body to ensure passengers don’t pick up dirt from the side of the car when getting in and out, and the large 20-inch large wheels add to the vehicle’s overall presence.

The load deck affords an extremely useful 1,011 litres of cargo volume, and is large enough to carry a Euro pallet. It also comes equipped with 12V/120W power outlets, and rotating hooks to help strap down loads such as tools and equipment.

The truck is finished in a choice of eight exterior colour options including silky white pearl, grand white, fine silver, space black, marble grey, indian red, atlantic blue and maroon brown.

Interior design

The interior of the new Musso has been completely redesigned, and brings the refinement and modern ambiance of a passenger car, but with a robust feel to complement the exterior look as a utility vehicle.

Remarkably well equipped as a truck, it features soft-textured Nappa leather seats which can be adjusted to three different levels of firmness for optimum driver and passenger comfort. In addition, the seats are heated front and rear, with the option of ventilated front seats to make long journeys more pleasant whatever the temperature.

A supervision instrument cluster with a 7” LCD screen ensures high visibility and provides the driver with all the information required with a choice of screen presentations and visual effects to ensure maximum personalisation.

The second row of seats is designed for three passengers to travel comfortably with plenty of leg and elbow room.

Driving performance

Powertrain

The new Musso powertrain employs a 2.2 litre turbo diesel engine manufactured by SsangYong, which delivers maximum power of 181PS and torque 420Nm. This highly efficient, quiet and proven e-XDi220 engine delivers progressive acceleration from a standing start, and strong low-end torque typical of SsangYong power units.

Transmission is either a 6-speed manual, or Aisin 6-speed automatic known for its smooth performance and durability.

The car’s 4-wheel drive system draws on SsangYong’s years of experience in all-wheel-drive technology. For better efficiency and greater fuel economy, the car features part time 4x4 with power delivered permanently to the rear wheels, and front wheel drive ‘dialed in’ electronically as required, with high and low ratios available as on and off-road conditions demand.

The new Musso also comes with a locking differential system to provide better traction on steep and slippery gradients, and for increased towing capability.

The NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) levels on new Musso are much improved over the car it replaces, due to its eight body mounts and polyester (PET) wheel-arch linings, and reduced road noise so passengers can travel in comfort. The engine bay also includes better sealing to improve sound, dust and waterproofing, while the fitment of larger rubber engine mounts helps reduce engine noise and vibration.

The amount of wind noise is reduced thanks to the fitment of quadruple-layered sealing, while aerodynamically designed wiper blades prevent the noise of wind flow around the windscreen.

Safety

With new technologies and features, the new SsangYong Musso ensures best-in-class safety, and includes up to six airbags.

With the high-strength steel construction of its Quad-frame, the car is stiffer than its competitors, achieved by using 1.5Gpa-grade ultra-strength steel - a world first, and featuring 81.7% high strength steel. This not only gives greatly improved body strength but also reduces weight.

The Musso also features impact absorbing elements in the steering wheel and steering column to minimise injuries from a frontal collision, while the structure and materials employed in the frontal area of the body are designed to improve pedestrian safety.

The car offers numerous other safety systems such as lane change assist, rear cross traffic alert and blind spot detection to help prevent accidents through advanced warning.

Infotainment & convenience

The advanced infotainment system includes DAB radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with device mirroring, with everything including navigation displayed on an 8.0” screen or in HD on a wide 9.2” screen (subject to model), with Tom navigation also available.

A supervision instrument cluster with a 7” LCD screen ensures high visibility, and helps the driver with conveniently displayed information such as the trip computer and turn-by-turn detail from the sat nav, and with the choice of three different digital displays.

Other features include auto closing - automatic door-locking when the key is carried away from the car, easy access - the automatic adjustment of the driver’s seat position when the door opens, dual-zone fully automated air-conditioning with fine dust filters and a 12V/120W power outlet in the cargo deck area.

There are cameras front and rear, and the latest suite of electronic safety aids includes 3D 360 degree around-view monitoring.
